Following closely the guidelines laid down by the local authority and covering all the core components recommended by them, the Chinese Standard Programme is designed with average school requirements in mind. It’s an integrated curriculum designed to help students to build up fundamental skills in reading, writing, and the understanding of the syntax of the Chinese language. There are five parts included in each of the learning units, namely vocabulary (including idioms and proverbs), usage and syntax, reading comprehension, writing practice and, last but not least, culture and personal development.
The programme is designed in traditional Chinese, the written language used in Hong Kong, and starts from the basic of character formation, common words and phrases, to the more sophisticated reading and writing in various styles and formats. Reading comprehension is an important part of the programme. All essays for reading comprehension are carefully selected to covers a broad spectrum of topics, all of interest to the younger generation and designed to widen the knowledge base of the students. Usage of the language is taught with abundant illustrations and examples. Chinese culture is also introduced in the form of extra reading topics which carries the dual purpose of inspiring ethical values. Many of these extra readings are about the customs, history, or historical figures that are an integral part of the culture of Chinese people.
The current programme covers students from kindergarten level to F3 (i.e. K-9)
