英語小百科 – A picture is worth 1000 words

‘A picture is worth 1000 words’ 這個英文諺語是指一張圖片勝過千言萬語，可以有效地表達一個複雜的概念。

這個諺語早於1900年代已被多次使用。譬如在1911年，紐約雪城廣告界的男士同好會 (the Syracuse Advertising Men’s Club) 曾在他們的文章裡寫道：’Use a picture. It’s worth a thousand words’。1918年，美國電單車用品公司Piqua Auto Supply House發表了一則廣告，以 ‘One look is worth a thousand words’為標題。雖然類似 ‘a picture is worth 1000 words’ 的諺語一早已廣泛應用到廣告上，然而，這個諺語的近代應用一般被視為最早來自Frederick R. Barnard。在1921年，Barnard為美國的有軌電車設計了一則廣告，標題名為 ‘One look is worth thousand words’，當時這則廣告旁邊還附上了諺語的來源說明。據Barnard解釋，這句話是來自一位日本哲學家。其後，有軌電車公司於1927年發表了另一則相同標題的廣告‘One picture is worth ten thousand words’， 還在廣告內農上中文翻譯：「畫意能達萬言」，暗示語句是來自中文的諺語。

其實，中文並沒有這句話。中國人的常用諺語是「百聞不如一見」，近似英諺 ‘seeing is believing’。 究竟這句英文慣用語是源自於日本還是中國，真是無從考究。

一張圖片勝過千言萬語這種說法並不是只有說英文的人會用。俄羅斯文學作品 ‘Fathers and Sons’ (父與子)其中就有這樣的說話： ‘The drawing shows me at once glance what might be spread over ten pages in a book‘。拿破崙亦說過： ‘Un bon croquis vaut mieux qu’un long discours‘ (A good sketch is better than a long speech)。
