English Standard Programme

Shane English Standard Programme is designed with the average level of English competence of Hong Kong students in mind. Based on the content of the Shane English programme used in other parts of the world, additional learning materials which are useful and interesting for local students are incorporated to enrich their learning experience.  The additional content will be relevant and useful in their everyday studies.

This programme is designed to encourage self-learning and has an integrated curriculum structured to balance the learning in all four key elements, namely reading, grammar, listening and writing. Each learning session is divided into 4 parts : vocabulary, grammar, reading comprehension, and writing. Listening drills are included for senior students. Pre-recorded audio materials delivered in a British accent by native English speakers are provided as part of the learning aids.

The design aims to achieve the following:

• Improved vocabulary range
• Emphasis on correct pronunciation
• Grammar taught in context
• Reading for pleasure for vocabulary building
• Exercises designed to develop listening skill
• Free writing to prepare for school exams
• Periodic review of the subject taught

Most self-learning programmes place a focus on improving students’ listening and reading skills because writing is a difficult subject to teach. We look at writing as a vital means of communication, and as such, see it as vital to guide our students to learn writing skills. In order to enhance students’ writing skills, our programme allows  students to increase their vocabulary by introducing up to 5,600 words at primary school level and 9,000 at junior high school level. Furthermore, we have at least one writing assignment in each learning session to train students to write essays related to the topic of the week.

“British English” is at the core of our programme. In order to train students to improve their pronunciation and listening skills numerous audio materials are provided. All narrations for our audio materials are delivered in a British accent by native English speakers. Providing this near-immersive English environment is essential for pupils in acquiring a second language and is an integral part of our design.

The current programme covers students from kindergarten level to F3 (i.e. K-9)
